India announced its T20 World Cup 2024 squad last month, and notably, no player from the top two IPL teams—Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)—was included in the 15-member squad.
KKR and SRH finished as the top two teams in the IPL 2024 league stage, securing two chances each to make it to the final scheduled for May 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Despite their strong performances, only Rinku Singh from KKR was named in the list of reserve players for the World Cup. This decision has sparked considerable criticism from fans, who highlighted Rinku Singh's impressive recent performances.
Conversely, Mumbai Indians, who finished at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table, have four players in the World Cup squad: Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah. Similarly, Delhi Capitals, which finished sixth, have three players: Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav.
Among the other playoff teams, Rajasthan Royals have three players—Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Yuzvendra Chahal—in the squad. Royal Challengers Bangalore have two representatives: Virat Kohli and Mohammed Siraj.
While no SRH player made it to the main squad, the team's young opener Abhishek Sharma has garnered praise for his strong performances this season. Former England captain Michael Vaughan suggested that Sharma could quickly rise through the ranks, drawing parallels to Yashasvi Jaiswal's rapid ascent through the IPL and into the Indian national team. Vaughan praised Sharma's technical skills and compared his batting style to legends like Brian Lara and Yuvraj Singh.
